I’ve decided to start delving into the archives on Thursdays to pull out one or more pictures from the past that didn’t make it to the website.
These photos are very old, they are from 2011, when I was working freelance in a few big studios in London and I was a baby photographer in the making.
I remember meeting one of the twins in a shop where he used to work as a cashier and thinking that he was extremely handsome, quite model-like, and wondering if I could maybe be so bold to ask him to pose for me. He was quite flattered, he told me that he had an identical twin and he wondered if I wanted to photograph them together. I couldn’t believe it, I adore identical twins and I felt as if I had hit photographic jackpot!
One of the perks of working as an assistant in the studios was that I could use them for free and, as you can see, I went a bit mad with the coloured gels because they were free as well and I was keen to experiment with them.
I shot digital to start with because I didn’t have almost any experience working with studio lights and I didn’t want to waste film, but I also shot a couple of rolls with a 6×7 medium format camera (see below). Looking back at them now, I can tell that I hadn’t adjusted the lights after taking the gels off because the highlights on the sides are a bit blown out in the last picture.
Considering that it was one of my first attempts at studio lighting, I am not too displeased with them though.

Queste foto sono molto molto vecchie, sono del 2011, quando lavoravo freelance in alcuni grandi studi londinesi ed ero un baby fotografo in divenire.
Mi ricordo che quando ho incontrato uno dei gemelli in un negozio dove lavorava come cassiere, ho pensato che fosse molto bello, come un modello, e mi sono chiesto se avessi il coraggio di chiedergli di posare per me. Ovviamente ce l’ho avuto, lui è stato molto lusingato e mi ha anche detto di avere un fratello gemello identico, chiedendomi se mi andasse di fotografarli insieme.
Non ci potevo credere, io adoro i gemelli e mi è sembrato di vincere il primo premio della lotteria fotografica!
Uno dei vantaggi del lavorare come assistente negli studi è il poterli usare gratis e, come potete vedere, ho un po’ esagerato con i gel colorati sulle luci perchè anche questi erano gratis ed ero curioso di provarli.
All’inizio ho scattato in digitale perchè, non avendo quasi esperienza nello scatto con le luci da studio, non volevo sprecare pellicola, ma ho anche scattato un paio di rulli con una macchina medio formato 6×7 (vedi sopra). Guardandole ora, mi accordo che non devo aver regolato le luci dopo aver tolto i gel perchè le alte luci ai lati sono un po’ sparate nella foto a pellicola.
Considerando che è stato uno dei miei primi esperimenti con le luci da studio, direi che non c’è male.
